Welcome to Ellis Island! Welcome to the United States! It's time to explore the immigrant experience.
Just like millions of immigrants did in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, we will pass in front of the Statue of Liberty, we will remain on the ferry until we arrive in Ellis Island. Here, we will begin our time travel experience to the peak immigration years of the largest migration in history. The gateway for over 12 million immigrants. What was the legal process? The medical examination? How were the days, weeks, or even months as a detainee on the Island?
This will be a thorough and fun exploration to one of the most dramatic changes in American history.
Now what? You have been accepted! You made it to America!
Approximately 1/3 of all immigrants processed in Ellis Island stayed in New York and, although some did not stay too long, others settled down in the Lower East Side. It's time to explore the neighborhood, the houses of worship, the food, the tenements, and the outstanding stories of the immigrants that settled down here.
