Varied tour to a colonial center, a World Heritage archeological site, and the biggest public caves complex in Mexico
This tour visits the most interesting witnesses of the rich past of Morelos state, both from the colonial, the prehispanic and the prehistoric era. You have options to fit the tour to your interests.
After crossing the 3000+ meter volcanic range south of Mexico City we plunge into the lush subtropical valley of Tepoztlán, magical town with an exceptional UNESCO-declared Dominican monastery. Alternatively, you can visit the 16th century cathedral or state museum (Palacio Cortés) in Cuernavaca.
Xochicalco was an important fortified city after Teotihuacan fell into decay. Here, priests (from all over today Mexico) gathered to adjust calendars and develop the cult of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god. From may till july, the underground solar observatory is breathtaking.
Even further back into the past, you face underground formations that were formed during millions of years and that take your breath away. The caves of Cacahuamilpa contain giant rooms up to 70 meters high: real cathedrals of nature.
- Tepoztlan or Cuernavaca (museums closed on Monday)
- Xochicalco ruins
- Cacahuamilpa caves (Guerrero state)
According to your interests, the visit to Cacahuamilpa caves can also be replaced by a visit to the colonial mining town Taxco, with nice architecture, original silver jewelry shops, an awesome cathedral and a unique mural mosaic.
This tour can also be extended to two days, including visits in the western part of Morelos state. Options include a jump into thermal pools or the birthplace of a cool river; a visit to some more of the protected Dominican and Augustine monasteries of the 16th century. For archeology adepts, a visit to the site of Chalcatzingo is a must: rock carvings dated 700A. C. reveal the early civilization processes in Central Mexico, under influence of the Olmec culture, besides offering grand views on the surrounding landscape and volcanoes. Abandoned and restored colonial haciendas offer a journey back in time, and/or a comfortable stay overnight.

On Apr 28, we had the pleasure of Jonas as our tour guide. We did the hike in Tepoztlan, explored the Xochicalco ruins and the Cacahuamilpa caves. Thank you so much for such great memories of Mexico and your knowledge and insight of where we went. If we come back again, we will book with you again. Brian is still expecting the drive back to Canada. Till next time!
