The Historic Cities of the Coast: Day Trip from Tunis, Hammamet, Monastir or Sousse
A relaxing day trip to the historic cities of the coast. Because of their beauty & sandy beaches, they have become popular resorts for Tunisians & foreigners alike. First to Monastir to see the 8th century ribat. This fortress/monastery/beacon was one of a chain which stretched from Alexandria to Rabat. From the ramparts, once can enjoy splendid views. This was an important filming location for "Jesus of Nazareth" & "Life of Brian". Opposite is the stunning mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the 1st president of the Tunisian Republic. To Sousse (ancient Hadremetum), where we walk the old town. We see the Great Mosque, Medina, ramparts & Kasbah - all built by the Aghlabids in the 9th century. You may wish to visit the Archaeological Museum with its superb mosaics, or the 4th century Christian Catacombs. To Hammamet, a sleepy fishing village until its beauty was discovered by European celebrities. A 16th century fortress overlooks a small medina & picturesque fishing bay. Return to Tunis

Moez was a delightful tour guide. He arrived on time (well before the scheduled pick-up time). He was informative, yet listened enough to know when I had enough of history. The required a lot of driving - he made sure I felt comfortable throughout the day. He was very attentive to my needs and requests. Friendly, knowledgeable, and has a sense of humor. In terms of the tour itself - I would not recommend visiting Monastir/Sousse in one day - too much driving for the limited time spent onsite.
