Being a registered architect and local historian I can offer great insight into the architectural styles that were popular in Mobile over three centuries. I sit on the Architectural Review Board for the City of Mobile which oversees the construction of our over six thousand buildings and homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places through the National Parks Service. I also have a great knowledge of the History of Mardi Gras which began in our lovely city.
I am the only tour guide in Mobile with a key to Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral which contains the finest antique stained glass window collection in the nation. I like to take visitors into The church and describe the different techniques of the Old World glass makers.
We will also visit The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. This great church has been given the title of Minor Basilica due to it being one of the oldest Catholic congregations in America. There are only 64 Minor Basilicas on earth.
Weather permitting we will visit Joseph Stillwell Cain's grave in the oldest graveyard in town. Cain revived Mardi Gras after the War of Northern Aggression and is grave is usually decorated by locals with Mardi Gras beads, doubloons and red and black roses.
I like to take my driving visitors through the 600 square blocks of Historic Districts with over 6, 000 buildings and home listed on the National Register of Historic Places through the National Parks Service. I will point out the more important structure describing the date of construction and architectural style. Along the way we will see 5 antebellum museum houses you may choose to visit while in Mobile.
A Recent Review of this guide
Not only was Craig a lot of fun to have as our guide he also showed how much he wanted us to enjoy his city by calling the night before to ask if we needed suggestions for dinner. Once we were on tour it was clear that he enjoyed showing us his home. It is one thing to have a lot of information on history, etc., it is another to be able to transmit that to strangers. Craig was the best.
