See Minneapolis' award winning parks and famous city lakes along the 50 mile loop around the city
The Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway is a 50 mile route that encircles Minneapolis and that travels along Minnehaha Creek, the Chain of Lakes, Theodore With Park (its largest park), Victory Memorial Parkway, and then to the Mississippi River and the downtown Minneapolis riverfront, where St. Antony Falls is located.
Along the way, we will visit, inter alia, Minnehaha Falls, two 300-year-old oak trees, an "elf" tree, the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden, the Lyndale Park Rose Garden, the Lake Harriet Bandstand, the Roberts Bird Sanctuary, Lakewood Cemetery (one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country), several war memorials, three river locks, the Stone Arch Bridge (overlooking St. Anthony Falls), the Guthrie Theater, and the gorge of the Mississippi.
After this tour, you will understand both why "Minneapolis" combines "mni", the Dakota word for water, with "polis", the Greek word for city and why Trust For Public Lands ranks the city's park system as the nation's best.
We will start at St. Anthony Falls in downtown Minneapolis.
From there, we will follow the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway to the following locations, where, depending on the weather and our inclination, we will get out and stroll/explore:
Mississippi River and parkway;
Minnehaha Creek and parkway;
Lake Harriet (its bandstand, Rose Garden, picnic areas);
Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun, with its sailing, windsurfing, beach volleyball courts, etc. );
Lake of the Isles (surrounded by stately mansions);
Theodore Wirth Park (with its new winter sports facility);
Eloise Butler Wild Flower Garden; and
Victory Memorial Drive (a living memorial to the local men who died in WWI).
The Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway basically encircles downtown Minneapolis. So we will end up back downtown.
Meeting Point + Tour Duration
Meeting Point Options: Hotel, Address or Intersection
Duration: 3 hours 30 min.
Along this scenic by-way, there will be many opportunities to park the car and go for a stroll along the Mississippi River, St. Anthony Falls, Minnehaha Falls, Minnehaha Creek, any of the Chain of Lakes, and a number of public parks. So the tour could easily last longer if you are in the mood to walk and explore.
This is essentially a driving tour with opportunities to get out and stroll as inspired by the scenery and as permitted by the weather. We will drive in my Chevy Traverse (with seating for up to 5 passengers -- or 6, if one or more of the passengers is petite).

Jim is terrific - knowledgeable, thoughtful, thorough, and enthusiastic. Since we had seen very little of Minneapolis previously, Jim made sure we visited (and learned about) the city centers (Minneapolis and St. Paul), the Capitol, the Guthrie, and churches plus the beautiful lakes, rivers, falls, parks, and residential areas. His expertise and insights helped us appreciate greatly the history and cultures of the state/region. It was a full day; we thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Highly recommend!
