A unique blend of scenery, culture, and wine, along with abundant hiking and birding opportunities.

Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria nowadays, but it was a regional (principality) capital in the late Middle Ages. Nestled among scenic limestone formations that stretch for miles and miles, Melnik has a number of old stone houses, churches, and wineries. The surroundings offer unique vistas to several mountains, an extinct volcano, bisected by a river, and boast an abundance of sites to visit - monasteries and churches, wineries, birding and butterfly areas, etc. The hiking trail network can accommodate all types of weather and personal abilities. The elevation varies between 600 and 6300 ft and within this range there are trails and routes that can be used on sunny, hot, cool, windy, etc conditions. Having said that, the area can be enjoyed also by people who can't / don't want to walk much. If you can get in and out of the car and walk on uneven terrain for a couple of hundred yards (and perhaps climb a few steps) you will again be able to enjoy this tour.

Itinerary

Day 1. We shall depart from the pre-arranged meeting point at the time set for the tour (normally 11:30). After we get out of Sofia (or the respective other location) we can stop to have our lunch at a nice place by the road. We will discover all the mountains around us. Later we will make an (optional) short stop by the road to see a 15th century church with amazing frescoes. Alternatively, we may spend some time in the beautiful Kresna Gorge area for short walking, hiking, photography, or simply relaxation. Arrival in the Melnik area in the late afternoon.

Day 2. Today we will explore the Rozhen monastery, located in a fantastic setting. We shall also visit sites of particular interest such as a wineries, and depending on your interests, take photos, explore the historical sites, birdlife, and the trails.

Day 3. Morning in the Melnik area enjoying the unique view of the town and its sandstone formations. Departure (an optional visit to another winery en route to Sofia and/ or the Rila monastery).
