Tour in the Gonzagas' palaces - The Art of Mantua: Power and Patronage in the Renaissance
PALAZZO TE, one of the most beautiful villas in Italy and a masterpiece of the Mannerism, was built by Giulio Romano, Raphael's most talented pupil, between 1525 and 1535, as a suburban residence for Federico II Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua. Giulio Romano has the distinction of being the only Renaissance artist to be mentioned by William Shakespeare. For the decoration project Giulio Romano followed the natural inclinations of the Duke, with the first half of the palace celebrating private passions and the second one public virtues and political aspirations.
PALAZZO DUCALE is a group of buildings built between 13th and 18th century as the royal residence of the Gonzaga family. The complex includes some 1000 rooms a castle and a private church and occupies an area of ca. 34, 000 m². Up to 1630 2, 000 paintings and 20, 000 valuable objects, the richest art collections known in Europe at that time, were stored in the palace. Now the palace is the hugest museum in Italy
