What an experience I got. I helped to interpret for the doctors because I was with the Health Care Service. One week working with them was an experience I couldn't forget.
Then, when I was in a Christian Course, most of our teachers were from other countries, I learned many things, especially to sharpen my language skills.
Another exciting experience was becoming one of the Liaison Officer and interpreter at the Pre-Assembly of WCC Asian Region held near my home. A participant from India left me a beautiful Indian wood-carving saying that so I can always remember him.
The next challenge in my life was to work at the orphanage as a male nanny for about a year in my city. One of my colleagues was a young man from Germany. He was in a youth exchange programme, so we worked together for this institution. Connection with tourists was less but still, we had some.
Last but not least, I worked in two Resorts where my tourist guide talent really started developing.
As a Tourist Guide, often I am being hired for both single day tour such as Highland Tour or trekking by a few tourists - mostly two - and multi-day tours by a group of travelers upto 35 people. The travelers usually are from overseas or inside the country.
In 2009 I obtained the Open Water certified in Scuba Diving. Thus, I can accompany tourists as their snorkeling buddy. I also have obtained a tour guide license from the government as it is required for every tour guide in Indonesia. I also joined the tour guide association in my province, and become a member if the association in my town.
Sometimes, I am hired as tour escort or tour leader out of North Sulawesi, such as to Ternate, Bali, Lombok, Makassar, Jogjakarta, the rest of Java, Kalimantan, Komodo, Papua, Togean Island, Gorontalo and so on.
There are various activities in the programme such as trekking, Japanese cave exploring, climbing mountains and volcanoes - going to the crater, go to Wild Life Sanctuary, visiting the little zoo, visiting villages, dinner out, bird watching, and sometimes I have requested customized tours.
I have a favorite quote: "Serve with heart". I always spice my service up with personal touch.
I think when people are traveling they want to meet friendly people who can show things eagerly. They want to be happy and enjoy everything and expect to find interesting places as well as meeting friendly smiling people.
I believe that most of the travelers expect different situations from their routine without ignoring the comfort of home. And, this is what I am trying to present in each tour.
There were times when I faced some difficulties in getting along with new people. Because new people have new preference. I cannot treat one similar to the other due to this issue. But I try to be equal on giving attention to one person to the other. I have learned how to quickly adapt to any situation too. Northern people of Sulawesi say 'The older a coconut is, then the more oil it can produces'. In the same sense, the more I lead the tour, the more I understand how to adapt with different perspectives of people and their preferences.
