A stroll between Etruscan culture of 3000 years ago and medieval time
I won't try to hide my passion for this fascinating, mysterious town. Populated during the first civilisation in Italy, 3000 years ago (seventh century B. C. ), Volterra was one of the twelve capitals of the Etruscan kingdom and was three times larger than it is today. It's one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Tuscany, with its narrow streets lined with 13th-century tower-houses, 17th-century palazzos with a Florentine influence and the spectacular Piazza dei Priori, the natural framework from the Middle Ages, synonymous with artistic splendour and rigorous civic architecture. Stephanie Meyer's saga New Moon was greatly influenced by Volterra with Velathri, the old name for Volterra, the name of one of the families in the book.
We will visit the Etruscan Volterra with the the gate, the city walls and eventually the Etruscan museum, then the Roman Volterra with the theatre and the spa, almost intact. And we walk in the
Medieval Volterra: the most beautiful places are Piazza dei Priori and the government building which influenced the architect of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence; the cathedral with its elegant 13th-century pulpit and octagonal baptistery; the Buonparenti tower-houses, the narrow streets and all the buildings in the old centre of the town. We can visit too freely the workshop of an alabaster craftman.
