In Istanbul, a long layover can be a bonus. Aykut picked me up at the airport at 7am and we saw some amazing sights including the Bosphorus Strait from Asia, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the site of the old Hippodrome, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar. Aykut, with a degree in history, added deeper context to each site plus Turkish history in general. All this plus the delicious (gluten-free) lunch made for a wonderful 6 hours in Istanbul with Aykut.
