Orta San Giulio's picturesque village + the Island S. Giulio + the Sacro Monte at Orta (UNESCO)
The village of Orta San Giulio is located at the foot of a small peninsula stretching into the blue waters of the lake. On the top of this promontory stands the "Sacro Monte of Orta" (UNESCO site). Here we'll enjoy fantastic views of the lake and its hills whilst visiting some of the most impressive chapels erected mainly during the 17th century and embellished with stunning fresco-paintings and multicolored terracotta sculptures.
We'll then visit the village of Orta strolling through its picturesque cobbled lanes, stopping at a Café for a good cappuccino! We'll then take a taxi boat to the picturesque Island San Giulio, the most romantic and mysterious Island of the Italian Lakes!
We'll visit the Sacro Monte first (UNESCO Heritage site) walking uphill from our meeting point (time:around 20 minutes along a romantic, old cobbled footpath) (option: by tourist train in 5 min). We'll then reach Orta on foot (15 min downhill) along a scenic path, and will take a taxi boat to the Island (5 min. ). The local tour on the Island lasts around 45 minutes. We'll also have a short break for a cappuccino/espresso!
Back to mainland, we'll then visit Orta village with its medieval and picturesque buildings, its narrow lanes which conceal intriguing century-old traces. End of the tour.
