Discover the forts along the Charente river

For this half day trip we will head south of La Rochelle with a private driver. Please note this tour can be modified according to your wishes.

On that trip we'll get to discover Fouras. There, depending on the opening times and your expectations, we will visit the XVth century castle reinforced by Vauban type fortifications during the XVIIIth century. Then, if you fancy it, we can go for a walk following the Three Musketeers steps, along the Charente estuary and catch a glimpse of Fort Boyard.

The other highlight of that trip is the exploration of Rochefort XVII-XVIII century city center. This city used to be a royal arsenal as the grid street plan and different historical military buildings testify it. But Rochefort highlight is the presence of Lafayette ship, the Hermione. You will love the sight of this amazing historical reconstruction (unfortunately the boat will be cruising in the Mediterranean sea from Feb. 1 to June 16, 2018).

Itinerary

We will leave from your hotel and drive around 30 minutes to Fouras. There, according to your wishes, we might stay 30 minutes or more, depending if you want to walk along the Charente Estuary to the Fort de La Pointe.
Then we will head to Rochefort (20 minutes), there we will sightsee :
- the navy hospital
- the city walls
- the royal rope factory
- Rochefort highlight, Lafayette ship, the Hermione.
Before driving back to La Rochelle (30minutes) we can have a walk on a path along the Charente river and enjoy the wildlife of the swamps surrounding the city.
