Discover the bay of Aiguillon and its legacy
The natural reserve of Baie de l'Aiguillon is located a few kilometers away from La Rochelle. From the cliffs overlooking the ocean you will get a beautifull view of the bay and the thousands of birds and migratory birds attracted by this site. It's one the best places in the area for bird watching.
WWII German bunkers, craft liftnet fisheries, oyster and mussel farms. . . there is plenty to see along the coastal path surrounding the bay.
Near the shore, the villages of Marsilly and Esnandes host two fortified churches from the XIIth century, their romanesque facades and medieval crenels. We will make a stop to visit them (depending on the opening time) and understand their strategical interests.
I will be happy to guide you on this tour off the beaten path only fifteen kilometers from La Rochelle.
From La Rochelle we will drive 15km north to Esnandes in order to discover San Martin's Church. Then we will head to Pointe Saint Clement and get a beautiful view on the Aiguillon Bay. Depending on your preferences we can take a walk on the coastal path or enjoy a drink or snack in one of the seaside restaurants.
Afterward we will go the Marsilly's fortified Church and make a last stop on the coast by one of the WWII german bunkers.
