During the Edo period, Kanazawa flourished as a castle town of the Kaga Clan. The lord Maeda ruled the Kaga Clan for almost 300 years. The Kaga Clan was the second biggest lord after the Tokugawa shogunate. The lord Maeda invested a lot of money to develop traditional arts and crafts for generations. Lots of historic sites worth visiting remain here. Kenrokuen garden, which was originally a private garden for the Maeda family, Kanazawa castle park, Higashichaya entertainment district, Nagamachi Samurai district, etc. Many traditional arts and crafts flourished during the Maeda ruling, and are inherited for generations. They are Kinpaku gold leaf, Kutani pottery, Shikki lacquer ware, Kaga Yuzen silk dyeing, etc. Kanazawa is also a gastronomic city. Various kinds of fish are landed at local ports facing the Japan Sea. Foods are fresh and tasted very good. Shinkansen bullet train has directly connected Kanazawa to Tokyo within 2 and a half hours since March 14, 2015.
