From its beginning to the modern city - events that shaped its development with a private tour guide
Why is Johannesburg situated where it is? No water, rocky hills - its an odd place for a thriving city. This tour looks at it's colourful history and it's development from gold mining camp to the financial powerhouse of Africa.
We travel through the suburbs, rich and poor, old and new, following the stories of this city. The story of a farmer with compassion, and the legacy he left this city, and a nature reserve protecting sites more than 800 years old, and the stories they have told.
We look at the mine shaft that started it all, and visit the financial heart of the city. We can go to the top of the Carlton for a bird's-eye view of the city and it's many landmarks. Mary Fitzgerald Square, with MuseumAfrica, the Workers Museum and Library is visited.
Museums such as the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and Origins Centre are options. Time available and your interest determine where we go.
From ancient to modern, Johannesburg has it all.
We drive through the suburbs discussing the history of the city, from the forces that formed the land, to the people that moulded it to their needs. Past a dam built by hand in order to earn a future, the oldest house in Johannesburg, and a city nature reserve with iron age sites to the site of the first gold strike. Into the city to Mary Fitzgerald Square where MuseumAfrica is, and on to Ferreiras Mine Museum and other sites such as the Carlton Centre for a bird's-eye view of the city.
This itinerary is flexible, and I can change it on the day depending on your interests. If time allows, a visit to a museum of your choice can be fitted in.

Lesley was our guide for three days. She always arrived on time, including picking us up at the train station. She is more knowledgeable about more things than anyone I know--history, botany, science, politics, etc. We learned a lot about South Africa from her as we drove to various places. She had lived in the United States for 2 years, and so could compare South Africa to the US, which was helpful.
