By train and bus to Taiwan's gold mining history
Welcome to 'Xinbei' or New Taipei, as the urban and rural countryside surrounding greater Taipei is now called. On the Northeast coast between Keelung and Ruifang you will see popular sights and experience the best parts of the area that you would see on an ordinary group big bus tour ever so briefly.
I will show you the special things that make Jiufen (food and shopping), Jinguashi (nature and the Gold Museum) and the nearby port of Keelung (night market) so interesting and its food so delicious, all in your own time.
As your private tour guide, I can adjust the group size, schedule, transport, duration and activities for your private tour - unlike a big tour bus which releases you for a limited time at every stop, to shop.
Please let me know any special requests you have. Taste some local food, desserts, sip teas and refreshing drinks!
Note: the local popularity of a day in Jiufen has led to traffic jams and controls on Saturday & Sunday. Only city bus, parking shuttles, and taxis are allowed in.
We can start our day in the morning hours, the tour is flexible to accommodate your schedule and interests. Best starting points are the Taipei train and bus stations for routes to the coast. It takes around 90 minutes to get there from Taipei, just half the time from Keelung.
The best transport choice depends on your location, but a typical route is by train to Ruifang, continue by bus to the furthest point: Jinguashi Gold Ecological Park, then back to Jiufen and return by bus to Taipei or Keelung.
If you like it and our time permits, we can stop for food in Ruifang, or Keelung - rated the best seafood night market and food street, before returning by bus or train to the city in just under one hour.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: it's most convenient to meet you at a train or Taipei bus terminal, your hotel or just outside the Keelung port if you're on a cruise.
End location: I will drop you off at the place you prefer, or arrange transfer on your own.
Duration: 8 hours
If you'd also like to see all of Keelung's open air night market which really comes alive after 6 pm, select a later starting time from Taipei, or ask me for additional time.
The Keelung Miaokou or temple food street is open from 6 a.m. to well after midnight every day. It is a 10-minute walk back to the port or train/bus station.
There are traffic jams and heavy walking congestion in Jiufen on Saturday and Sunday. Check with me first?
We will take bus or train or combine both, and also do some walking up and down steep village stairways: bring your walking shoes and an umbrella or raincoat.
If you are taking this trip as a ToursByLocals shore excursion from Keelung, then it's better to take this trip by private taxi for the day at additional cost NT$ 4500 or equivalent in US$
Estimated Local Cash Needed
1000 NTD - to buy small items and food, your own bus and train tickets, taxi fares.
Tea houses often start their tasting charge at NT$ 150 per person. This can be applied to the cost of the package of tea you'd choose, the remaining tea leaves to take home.
I'm not a driver, but I can arrange a car so you can see more and save time.

Michelle was a wonderful guide. She was a good communicator and let me know exactly what to expect on our trip. She provided great local insights to history and food.
