Jioufen, Jinguashi and Keelung

Itinerary

Visit Taiwan's old gold and copper mining villages on the Northeast coast.

Walk by the Japanese style buildings in the Gold Ecological Park in Jinguashi. The Gold Museum displays the largest gold bar in Taiwan and a preserved mine tunnel from the Japanese era. On first Mondays when the park is closed we can explore more of the village and the location of the former Allied POW camp, now a memorial site.

In nearby Jioufen, the old gold mining village is now the best place to sample local food, browse in shops, and enjoy tea a with a view of the panorama of the North Coast. Stroll down Jishan old street and the steep steps of Suqi Road, past the old cinema and tea houses.

Next we may travel to Keelung's locally acclaimed Miaokou food steet and night market if your time permits. The market starts from 6 pm, but the food street around the Danji temple is always open.

To enjoy all of the night market activity, you may choose a later starting time for your trip, like 10 am.

Meeting Location + Tour Duration

Meeting location: Keelung port or hotel.
Coming from Taipei: the Keelung North train station (easier access)

End location: we'll bring you to your hotel, cruise ship meeting point or train station in Keelung.

Duration: 8 hours

From Taipei it takes about 60 minutes to travel to Keelung by car, train or public bus. Return from Keelung is around 35 minutes on the highway, plus additional time in town.

Saturday and Sunday are quite busy; with traffic and vehicle controls in place in Jiufen for cars above sedan size (4)

Food and drinks in tea houses and shops, many accept credit cards. Admissions, such as for the Gold Museum 80 NT Dollars, optional gold panning 100 NT Dollars, entry to Beishan 5th tunnel 50 NT Dollars. Buying any items of a personal nature for shopping, souvenirs, snacks, tea tasting and restaurant meals.

Restrictions

Driving and guiding must be kept separated on Taiwan's busy roads, so my trips are offered with a local agency and professional drivers.
Regular hours are from 9 to 5, at other times and for extra actual time surcharges may apply.
