From the « Jews of the Pope » to WWII
Since the Antiquity an important Jewish community settled in Provence, especially in its northern part known as the "Comtat Venaissin", the land of the Pope.
Through the centuries the "Jews of the Pope" left here a remarkable heritage ; an heritage made of joy and deep sadness.
We will focus on the relations between this community and the provencal society, the Popes and the kings of Provence and France, and also their lifestyle and important contribution in fields such as economy, science and arts.
Avignon and the Palace of the Popes, the old Jewish quarter and the outside of the synagogue. On demand the synagogue can be visited, please let me know.
Carpentras, where you will of course see the old jewish ghetto and the synagogue, one of the oldest in Europe, known for an amazing medieval mikve.
