Carpentras and the oldest synagogue in France
Since the Antiquity an important Jewish community settled in Provence, especially in its northern part known as the "Comtat Venaissin", the land of the Pope.
Through the centuries the "Jews of the Pope" left here a remarkable heritage ; an heritage made of joy and deep sadness.
We will focus on the relations between this community and the provencal society, the Popes and the kings of Provence and France, and also their lifestyle and important contribution in fields such as economy, science and arts.
Carpentras, where you will of course see the old jewish ghetto and the synagogue, one of the oldest in Europe, known for an amazing medieval mikve.
I can book a kosher restaurant in the splendid Fontaine de Vaucluse (lunch not included)
In Cavaillon the former synagogue transformed into a museum
In Aix-en-Provence, the camp des Milles was a "transition" or "regrouping" camp before people were sent to the death camps. It is now a memorial, a remarkable museum, and an education facility for new generations
