What about an escape to Ioannina Island, a must to visit spot here with its exciting stories, architecture, and nature?
Ioannina Island is usually a destination for any visitor to the city. It was first inhabited in the XIII century by monks, who came here from the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium). They organized here several monasteries and for the following centuries, the Island was a monastic society. In the XVII century, the first settlement appeared here and the island flourished during the Ali Pasha's period (end of the XVIII - the beginning of the XIX centuries). In this place, Ali Pasha died in 1822. The traces of those times and events are rather well preserved till nowadays. The Island is a museum of Medieval period in itself. Today, its community is rather small. The main occupation for the local people are the tourist services. Thus, this is one of the main tourist hot spots in the city.
