Now, are you ready to experience the Big Island of Hawaii via the roads less travelled? Let's go! Rainforests & volcanoes, elegance & awe, spectacles & hidden treasures- we have it all!
**A special note to visitors: For the first time in 35 years there is NO red, glowing, or flowing lava anywhere on the island! Although Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has recently been reopened, there are limited access and modified services. Since the early 2018 eruption event of Kilauea Volcano, some island attractions, both at the summit and along the Lower East Rift Zones are no longer accessible. That said, we are confident, even with some new restrictions, that we can safely show you wonders to last a lifetime!
Hawaii is the perfect place to share my life-long passion for the wonders of the natural world. I have been an interpretive naturalist guide, and educator- both in and out of the classroom- for nearly three decades. Before being a Hilo-based guide, I led eco-oriented, family-friendly tours in Alaska, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands. Over the years, I have guided film crews from the BBC, Discovery Channel, Disneynature, and Animal Planet. In 2010, I became a permanent resident of Hawaii, and since, have had the great fortune of showing visitors from around the world the spectacular diversity of what many believe is the "Best Island. "
Your interests are my primary concern! What intrigues you- our unique flora and fauna, and how it came to be? The island's dynamic geological saga? Hiking across a new lava field? I love bringing history to life, and to "talk story. " It has been a personal quest of mine to make a concentrated study of the distinctive Hawaiian history, rich culture, and traditional stories as taught by our Kupunas (Hawaiian Elders).
My philosophy as a guide is to take an immersive approach. I believe that quality is more important than quantity. If you are one who wants to check an attraction off your list and move on, then my private tours may not be for you. We do not rush; we take the time to absorb- to learn the history, to listen to the birds, to luxuriate in the moment.
The advantage of having a single, (Honda) van which carries a maximum of 6 passengers is that we can be flexible- not only for alternative start times, but it allows us to choose, spontaneously, to change our itinerary to skirt around rainy weather, or avoid the big-bus crowds. I do not believe in hidden costs; I cover all park fees, serve a fresh picnic lunch on tours over 4 hours, and provide cold drinks & snacks, umbrellas & rain ponchos, and folding chairs, should we opt to take a restful break. Another free perk is that I will upload all the photos I take during our adventure to the 'cloud' and then provide you with a special access code so you are able to view, download, and share as you like.
Being committed to the future of our island community, a portion of all my net profits goes to local organizations that protect and replenish our island's unique and delicate natural ecosystems. You can rest assured that your tour fee will also be benefitting the same habitats and people that you are experiencing and enjoying.
I truly believe in the spirit of Aloha; I hold it in my heart. Together, let's share the Aloha of this land, and each other!
A Recent Review of this guide
As it was my first venture to Big Island, I really had no idea what to do for a 1-day trip with my 3 other traveling companions. Well DeWaine solved that problem! Very accommodating with meeting location, great informative intro on the big island, and multiple locations that felt like a friend was taking us to the vital local spots. DeWaine is super nice and has a great sense of humor and I would definitely use him again. He knows his stuff. Mahalo, DeWaine! You da man!
