Now this was a treat--we spent the first day in Irkutsk and then on to Lake Baikal. Typically, church visits offer a fair amount of redundancy but Tanya keyed in on the best of the local variety—well worth it. Irkutsk surprises with many old wood houses near modern buildings that reveals its frontier feel having been since antiquity, a gateway to east and west and the Arctic.
