Tour including Herculaneum and the Volcano that caused its burial (with private transportation)
THIS TOUR CAN BE CUSTOMIZED TO YOUR NEEDS AND REQUESTS.
The thriving Roman city met its fate in 79 A. D. , when Mount Vesuvius erupted. The volcanic ash from Mt. Vesuvius buried the entire town with many of its inhabitants.
Herculaneum is much smaller but better preserved than Pompeii. While Pompeii had been covered in four to five meters of ashes, an avalanche of muds 20 meters thick had buried Herculaneum.
Second stories, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings and mosaics are still preserved. With my explanation I'll make the city come to life.
The tour starts with a two hour guided tour at Herculaneum with me.
Lunch break in a typical Italian restaurant tasting some good wine and some traditional dishes.
After lunch the driver will take you to Mount Vesuvius.
A 20 minutes walk is needed to reach the highest part of the crater.
A wonderful 2 hours walk through the city of Herculaneum with Temple of the Augustali, the beach where more then 300 skeletons were found, the thermal baths, the forum, the house of Neptune and Amphitrite, the Samnite house, the gymnasium, the house of the Dears and much more.
- Quick lunch break if required
- Transfer to Mount Vesuvius and hike to the Crater
At the top of the volcano is a crater rim that affords a view into the crater that still fumes slightly. Besides that you will have a stunning panorama overseeing the Bay of Naples, Capri, Ischia, the edge of the Sorrento coast and more. Everyone has to walk on his own the last 750 metres steeply uphill. Closed-in shoes are essential.
After you will walk back down to meet your driver.

We had a very personable driver, Angelo, who met us at ship, helped find lunch and took us up to Vesuvius and back on time, even played us music. He coordinated with Felicia, an antiquities expert who took us though Herculaneum in the morning. She was fabulous for her knowledge, ability to speak to and beyond the interests of our grandkids with passion and with great visuals. Roberto at the top of the crater was wonderful also. This was our favorite day, packed with learning and experiences for a lifetime
