Former working class area and today the most colorful residential zone of Helsinki and Finland
Did you know? Kallio is the former working-class district of Helsinki and Today it's the most bohemian and liberal area of the whole country. It has a colorful history, small lovely boutiques, coffee shops, second-hand shops and a large number of bars.
Hear stories about the criminal background of the area and its notorious bars, see the interesting and historical buildings and sights of Kallio, take a look at one of the oldest public saunas of Helsinki and hear more about the Finnish sauna culture, experience the area with a real local and see how locals live in one of the most authentic districts of Helsinki!
- The tour will start from the Hakaniemi area, which is part of the Kallio district, where you will hear the history of this fascinating neighborhood
- Walking towards the Kallio church, the first library of Finland, built for the working class with the financial help of the state and many other interesting buildings and sights. There might also be the possibility to visit the church tower (with an amazing view over the city of Helsinki!), but the permission needs to be asked each time, in case that the church has an event or mass.
- Continuing the walking tour, you will see Torkkelinmäki, a luminous and parklike residential area built in the 1920s, here you will also see Helsinki's only original and traditional public wood-fired sauna, that dates back to 1928
