The ideal city in Germany with a private guide
Heidelberg is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The picturesque ensemble of the castle, the Old Town, and the river Neckar surrounded by hills, which inspired the poets and artists of romanticism, still fascinates millions of visitors from all over the world today. But there's more to Heidelberg than romanticism. There is something "ideal" about it, as J. W. von Goethe mentioned. It is the historical flair of this University city, with its stunning setting, the culinary delights which meet every taste. Heidelberg Castle and the extensive castle gardens are a magnet for visitors and the city's top attraction. Walk up one of the many paths - or take the Philosopher's Path where you have a breathtaking view of the city, the castle, the river and the surrounding hills. Back in the city you will find a huge variety of historic buildings, impressive memorials and all of which have fascinating tales to tell. Enter the old town and you find yourself embarking on a journey back through history.
Relax and visit the famous Heidelberg Castle and gardens, including panoramic views of the whole city and region. Taking a walk through the city and its vibrant intellectual and artistic scene is really inspiring for the intellectually curious traveller. Wonderful bookstores and libraries all over. The beautiful market squares, the old town and many interesting sites on the way are waiting for you.

We did not see Heidelberg because of rail constraints and went to Mainz instead. Mainz was unexpectedly delightful, from the whimsical fountain glorifying the four main pillars of the city's community (including the fool) to the Gutenberg Museum. While we did not visit the latter, we did visit a printing shop associated with it and had an encounter with some of their staff who needed an impromptu Hebrew and biblical translation which I was glad to provide.
