Travel back in time to experience a bit of "Old Hawaii."
The east side of the Big Island is filled with local history and tropical foliage- this tour has plenty of both!
We begin in Hilo. From the statue of King Kamehameha to Rainbow Falls, this region is rich with historic events & fascinating folklore.
Then, onto "Old Hawaii, " a picturesque scenic route winding through rainforests, creeping over one-lane bridges across secluded streams & gentle falls. Peer over the cliff's edge at Onomea Bay.
Next, stroll ½ mile to the impressive Akaka Falls, plummeting 442' into the gorge below.
Continuing on old back roads, we stop at a serene creek-side park for a delicious, locally-made picnic lunch. From there, Laupahoehoe Point- historically significant & a great place to look for whales!
Up the coast, past Honoka'a is one of Hawaii's most sacred sites, Waipi'o Valley. This stunning "Valley of the Kings" was once the capital of early Hawaiians & a thriving community of thousands.
Then back to Hilo to end the day at the tranquil & lovely Queen Lili'uokalani Park.
King Kamehameha Statue
Rainbow Falls- Home to demi-god Maui's Mom
Naha Stone- young Kamehameha sealed his fate here
Old Mamalahoa Scenic Byway- 4 mile "jungle tunnel", one-lane bridges, waterfalls
Onomea Bay overlook- one of the old historic ports destroyed by earthquakes, now a tropical paradise
Akaka Falls- to see this magnificent 442' cascade, we take a ½ mile loop through the jungle, or a short-cut of about 300' directly to the falls. Both are paved but have stairs, (or there is a partial view from the park entrance. )
