Discover Japan's very first tourism hot spot!

(Be advised that this tour does NOT go to Mt Fuji. Hakone is 60 kms away from Mt Fuji and on a different route. If you wish to go to the mountain itself, please choose another tour/guide than this one. Thank you!)

Located less than 100 km south west of Tokyo, Hakone has been famous among the Japanese people for centuries! Due to its hot springs, its stunning views of Mt Fuji, its beautiful forests and its strategic location on the Tokaido trade route, Hakone was Japan's premier tourism hot spot during the whole pre-modern/Edo period.

Nowadays, the Tokaido trade route no longer exists but Hakone's popularity remains strong with domestic and foreign tourists alike! Thanks to modern transportation services, it is now only a short trip from Tokyo to Hakone, giving the modern traveller the opportunity to get away from the city and enjoy a beautiful mix of nature, history, stunning views of Japan's most iconic mountain, along with very impressive art museums. So, come join me for a day trek full of discoveries!

Itinerary

The tour is customizable, to some limited extent as local public transportation services are good but infrequent, but would be along the following lines:

*Meeting at your hotel lobby at 08:00 am
*Transfer by the Odakyu Romance car express train from Shinjuku to Hakone's main station
*Transfer by local bus to the lake Ashi area
*Visit of Hakone shinto shrine (if time permits): a shrine over 1200 years old !
*Visit of the checkpoint exhibition (Optional, additional costs)
*Lake Ashi cruise, on a pirate ship!
*Quick lunch on a side of the lake.
*Ropeway ride to the Owakudani volcanic valley and visit. You can enjoy very nice views of Mt. Fuji on the way and in the valley itself, subject to weather conditions.
*Ropeway and cable car ride down the mountains.
*Visit of the Open Air museum (Optional, additional costs): fantastic collection of contemporary art !
*Mountain train ride back to Hakone's main station.
* Train ride back by the romance car to Shinjuku station, aiming to arrive there at/around 18:00.
