Jewel-like View with Abundant Cutural History with a Private Guide.
Hakodate is a city first opened to the rest of the world after some 300 years' of isolation policy in Edo Era. So, Hakodate experienced contact with various foreign cultures, which you can see in the Western and Japanese mixed archtectures in the western part of he city. We had about 5, 000, 000 visitors last year, out of whom 340, 000 are from abroad. Hakodate also was chosen the most popular place in Japan in 2014, followed by Sapporo and Kyoto. Why so popular? People are attracted by its unique cityscapes, fresh seafood and marine products, a night view seen from the top of Mt. Hakodate, hot spring and its cultural history as well as beautiful nature!
Fresh squid, scallops, sea urchins, abalone, you can name it!
They say air in Hakodate is different from metropolitan areas. So a refreshing air! Here, you can feel carefree and breathe green air and enjoy strolling around the city, With your cheerful guide who was born and brought up here!
This tour starts with meeting you at the lobby of Hotel Paco. The hotel is located along the coastline, so I'll take you to Hakodate Park along this coastline. This is the first Western style park in Hokkaido and was made by local people, not by the government in 1879. Few travelers visit there, because it is not publicized. Then, if the weather permits, I'll take you to the top of Mt. Hakodate where you can get a bird-eye view of Hakodate. After descending, let's stroll around Motomachi District and witness how much Hakodate had experienced contact with various foreign cultures looking at the streets and houses here. The next destination is Redbrick Warehouses (Bay Area), you'll enjoy shopping here as well. Then, we go to Goryokaku Park where 1600 cherry trees are waiting for your visit. This is a place where the last civil war was fought and Japanese modernization started in 1869. On the way to JR Hakodate Station, I'll take you to a special place known only to local people. Let's save it later!

Keiko speaks & writes excellent English, & was very patient with my 73 year old mother. At the morning market, she was able to guide us to the shops we want & even commented where some items would be cheaper in a supermarket. Enjoyed Keiko's sharing of Hakodate's history. Lunch was at a katsu (pork cutlet) place at my mother's request, which was delicious. Despite the last minute booking, Keiko took the time to create our itinerary with colored printouts. Enjoyed the local supermarket trip!
