Victorian Architecture of Scotland's biggest city
I will meet you at Glasgow Central Station on the Concourse (or at your hotel) at 9. 30am and commence a walking tour of some of teh significant buildings in Glasgow City Centre.
(note --if you are arriving in Scotland at the Greenock Cruise Terminal, I will provide you with clear instructions on how to get from dockside to Greenock Railway Station , then to Glasgow Central Station. An easy short journey
These will include St VIncent Place, "form follows function"
George Square "the triumph of Empire"
Glasgow Cathedral "magnificent pre-reformation church"
Glasgow University "major Gothic cloistered"
Kelvingrove Galleries "Glasgow's most popular attraction"
and examples of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's unique building design.
We will also have a ride on the Underground train -- the joint second oldest in the world --and get back to Glasgow Central Station/ Hotel by 4. 30pm or earlier if required
At some point we will have lunch and the tour will end at Glasgow Central Station by 4. 30pm or earlier if required
This will depend partly on the weather and I will use taxis to augment our walk
We will start by looking at the 19th century buildings nearby, and walk round the corner on to George Square and then on to the Cathedral where as a Blue Badge qualified guide I can give you a full private tour of this impressive 12th century building. still being used for its original purpose to this day
Next we will taxi up to Glasgow University (possibly having lunch in that area) and I will take you through the Gothic Buildings, including the Cloisters and the Chapel. We then walk down to the Kelvingrove Galleries, which has something for everyone for a short visit. Thereafter, its a trip on the Glasgow Underground to Shields Road to see Mackintosh's Scotland St School and then its back by Underground Train to Glasgow Central Station by about 4. 30pm.
