Visit TWO geothermal areas and the Living Maori Village with a private guide
Join me for this special combo tour visiting two geothermal parks and a living Maori Village. This full day tour showcases a fascinating geothermal environment known to the Maori people as the place of "sacred waters" (Wai-O-Tapu) as well as a visit to an authentic Maori Village that has been hosting visitors since the early 1800's.
Highlights of this tour include:
- A visit to the largest mud volcano site in Rotorua to see the boiling mud
- Lady Knox Geyser (time dependent)
- Stunning colour ponds and the famous "Champagne Pool" in Wai-O-Tapu
- Guided tour of the Living Maori Village to learn how the villagers have adapted to the harsh geothermal environment. See how they bathe, cook and heat their homes.
- Enjoy a Maori cultural performance complete with the famous Haka
- Rotorua City Highlights - Government Gardens and the Blue Baths, Rotorua Lakefront and Rachels Pool
- Stunning countryside, deep gorges and beautiful beaches
Lots of photo opportunities and great memories to take away with you.
I begin the tour with a gentle drive through stunning gorges and pine forest plantations on our way to Wai-o-Tapu Geothermal reserve, 27 kilometres south of Rotorua. On the way you will learn about the history of New Zealand and the arrival of the Maori people. Time permitting you will see The Lady Knox geyser erupt (10. 15am). After Lady Knox we visit the largest boiling mud pool in New Zealand which is fascinating, before exploring the diverse landscape of Waiotapu.
Next we head back to Rotorua for a guided tour of Whakawerawera Living Maori Village. See how the Maori people have adapted to this harsh environment. During a guided tour, you will see two more geysers from the village - Pohutu and Price of Wales feathers and be treated to a Maori cultural performance including the famous Haka.
After a Rotorua City highlights drive including a drive by the lakefront and Government Gardens, we make our way back to Tauranga via lush countryside, dense forests and numerous kiwifruit orchards.

Susanna was extremely flexible--first customizing a long day tour so we could see both Hobbiton and the thermal areas. When our ship was delayed, she completely reworked our day to make the best of it--thanks so much, Susanna! The cruise ship excursions were all completely cancelled--so glad we booked this private tour for our group. She is a spectacular tour guide--book her and you won't regret it.
