It is known as the Straits Settlement alongside with Malacca & Singapore. Georgetown is the capital city of the State of Penang. The origin of the name came from the areca nut known in Malay as " Pinang" eventually corrupted to become "Penang" as in English Language. When Francis Light founded Penang, it was named "Prince Of Wales Island" in commemoration of the English mornarch. It was also known as Pulo Kesatu or "single island". The island initially was uninhabited, but since it's founding, it had been the busiest port in the region. The most prominent trade is spices. Penang is best known as a melting port for many ethnic groups, which mainly consist of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Javanese, Japanese, Arabs, English, Dutch, Germans, French, Thai, Armenians, Jews and many others.
