Uzbek textile and handcrafts
Fergana Valley. Four importent cities: Kokand, Margilan, Fergana and Rishtan. All these cities well known from ancient time in Central Asia. Since old days Margilan has been famous for its wonderful Ikat fabric and fine silk. Via the Great Silk Road traders brought Margilanian silk to Baghdad, Cairo and Athens. In our days Margilan is considered to be the best enterprise manufacturing handmade silk in Uzbekistan. At the factory you can see the whole silk-making process from cocoons processing to finished product. Using the traditional technology of making the Ikat fabrics and carpets weaving by hand - that is the same techniques Fergana weavers used in ancient times. Next wellknowen is Rishtan Village, which since ancient times has been famous for its ceramics. Rishtan pottery differs with richness of decor, which is dominated by blue. This unique blue glaze "ishkor" is produced by hand from natural mineral pigments.
