St.Barnabas, St.Nicholas Cathedral, Varosha, Kyrenia Gate, Kervansaray, Arasta
Famagusta is a city in the east of the island. St. Barnabas Monastery and his grave can be visited. Every year on his birthday which is June 11th. a big Mass takes place.
St. Nicholas Cathedral will be visited in the old city of Famagusta which was built 1298-1312. We than drive to the capital of the island in North part. Kyrenia Gate, Venetian Column will be seen on our excursion today. It is a good opportunity if you want to visit 2 different places on a same day.
Today we are travelling to the east of the island. Our first stop will be at St. Barnabas Monastery. Barnabas is one of the Saints whom started spreading Christianity with St. Paul.
Who built St. Nicholas Cathedral? What did the Ottomans do when they took over Famagusta from the Venetians? You will learn all about the history while you get to take photos of this beautiful Medieval City. We have lunch (extra) facing the 13th century Cathedral. We have a panoramic view of Varosha. Which is also known as Ghost Town. We drive to Nicosia and pass by Kyrenia Gate and Venetian Column and walk at Arasta and drink our coffee at Buyuk Han. Which is one of the eighteenth Kervansarays that was built during the Ottoman Period in the 16th century. It will be a memorable day for you in Cyprus.
