The Wild and Rugged Nature of the Disappearing North West Coast (in season tour)
The former fishing village of Blokhus, now a premier, international holiday centre with fine, white, sandy beaches and clean, blue sea, is a lively holiday centre. Every year it hosts a Sand Sculpture Festival, when international sand artists are invited to display their talents, based on an annual theme, this year 'Magical Adventures'.
A little further up the coast is where nature is at its wildest. A spectacular sight, enormous migrating sand dunes, moving several metres annually in a north easterly direction. Rubjerb Knude lighthouse, once several hundred metres inland, is now on the edge of falling into the sea. Although half of it is buried in the sand, the views from its top are amazing.
Driving into the pretty village of Lønstrup we see the effects of nature, cliff erosion leaving summerhouses on the edge of the cliffs. Here we have time to stroll around the workshops and galleries of the artisans who have made their home in this old fishing village, before we head for home.
Driving west along Denmark's wild west coast, via a sweeping panorama of dramatic views and quaint villages, we stop at Blokhus to take in the monumental sand sculptures. A tableau 100 m. long and 6-7 m. high is centre stage and forms the focus of the theme. Individual interpreted and crafted pieces, 4-6 m. high, dotted around the park, complete the exhibition.
Our next stop is the truly amazing migrating sand dunes. 40 m. in height, surrounding and covering the lighthouse, which was built 200 m. inland and is now on the edge of the cliff. The sand at one time almost completely covered it, today, we can climb to the top for some breathtaking views. Experts say it will fall into the sea within the next 10-15 years.
Lønstrup has completely reinvented itself as the artisan centre of North Jutland. Here, for those feeling a little hungry, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to sit and take in the views. Take a stroll to the beach between the cliffs to see the few remaining fishing boats.
