Dachau tour - Concentration Camp Memorial with a certified guide.
The name Dachau will forever be associated with the most infamous crimes of the Nazis.
This was the first concentration camp set up in Germany and served as a model for the others that followed. We'll see all the remaining original areas in the memorial (gatehouse, bunker, administration HQ, crematorium, rail platform, etc. ), have a look inside the extensive museum and have time to see the documentary film shown in English. You'll see how the camp began and how it was liberated by U. S. troops.
You'll also see how it is remembered and presented, and how Germany comes to terms with this past today.
I've given Dachau tours for several years now, for student groups, families, individuals, the military, private tour companies and for the memorial itself. I am officially certified by the memorial site to offer tours in English here. More people every year visit the memorial site here to contemplate, learn and to honor the victims.
For this Dachau tour we start with the World War I era buildings the Nazis used for the camp at first, then on to the rail platform, gatehouse, roll-call square and administration HQ.
We also see the reconstructed prisoners' barracks and fence. After that we walk over to the religious memorials and the crematorium area.
We usually finish up back at the museum, which includes the bunker, to see the 22-minute documentary film in English. But the timing is very flexible and more or less time can be spent at each site depending on the group's interests.
There is also, of course, plenty of time to ask questions and for discussion. It is also possible to start the Dachau tour with the film and then see the memorial afterwards.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: We normally meet for the Dachau tour at the entrance of the Visitor's Center at the Dachau Memorial. It is a grey building, right next to the bus stop and across the street from the main parking lot. I'll be wearing a nametag with my name, Jason, on it.
I can also pick you up at your hotel in Munich if you prefer.
End location: Either back at the Dachau Vistor's Center or at your hotel in Munich.
Duration: 2 hours 30 min.
2.5 hours is enough time to see the Dachau memorial, visit the museum and see the documentary film. Travel time from Munich is an additional 45 minutes each way.
The Dachau Tour is a walking tour. We use Germany's efficient and dependable public transportation if you'd like hotel pickup.
Estimated Local Cash Needed
10 Euros - If you'd like me to pick you up at your hotel in Munich, there is an additional 10 euros cost per person for public transportation. You should also probably bring with something to drink or a few euros extra to buy something at the cafeteria there.

We were visiting Munich with our four grand kids ages 11-18 and we wanted them to see Dachau and get an informed and sensitive perspective as a family. Jason was perfect for this approach. He promptly met us and gave a presentation with just enough background from which we were able emotionally experience the site without being overwhelmed by facts and figures. He was accommodating to our questions, and if you are looking to feel the experience rather than just memorize what happened, he was excellent.
