Constanta and Histria archaeological tour
More than two thousand five hundred years ago, the Ancient Greeks explored new frontiers in the Black Sea area and founded settlements to trade with the locals. Later on, the Romans allowed these settlements to develop and reach remarkable heights of civilization.
This tour gives you the opportunity to explore this extremely interesting part of the Romanian Black Sea coast, taking you to the very remote and well preserved ancient fortress of Histria. The oldest settlement on Romanian territory, this now abandoned ancient fortress boasts over 2, 700 years of history and is really a must see place for archaeology enthusiasts.
We also get to explore in more detail the remains of the Roman mosaic floor and all the other ancient ruins that made Tomis (a. k. a. Constanta today) the leading Roman settlement on the Black Sea coast.

We start the day in Constanta exploring the Greek and Roman heritage that made the former colony of Tomis famous and we'll try to elicit why the ancient poet Ovid was sent here to pay for his mistakes against the Roman Emperor. The remains of the Roman mosaics and the brilliant marble statues of the local museum will definitely win the heart of any archaeology enthusiast.
We then go to Mamaia, the beach area of Constanta, where we have a lot of opportunities for lunch or just a light snack before heading out into the deep Romanian countryside on our way to what has been called "the Romanian Pompeii", the well preserved ancient Greek and Roman colony of Histria. After the exploration of the museum and of the ruins we come back to Constanta.
*Histria is located about 35 miles north of Constanta in a very isolated area and it is still organised as an archaeological site, so fingers crossed for some excavation works. Weather conditions, especially in the summer, are harsh with a lot of heat and sun.
