Experience Colorado's Observable Wildlife with a private guide
In and around Boulder, live some of America's most impressive and yet most observable wildlife. Within an hours drive, wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts alike can view elk, mountain goats, Rocky Mountain big-horned sheep, moose, mule deer and even an occasional black bear. Amazingly, often the best wildlife photography is close to the road.
The key is to know when and where to look. Places include Rocky mountain National Park, Mt Evans and the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. My extensive background in wildlife photography and natural history, gives you your best chance to safely encounter and learn about Colorado's majestic wildlife.
For advanced photographers, I offer the highest level of professional nature photography instruction, including wildlife photography, wildflower photography and even night photography. However, my unique style of teaching applies to everyone. It's non-technical and applies to smart phones and DSLR cameras alike. I am the author of six books on photography.
There are two major wildlife viewing areas. If you stay in Boulder or Denver, you can visit either Mt Evans or Rocky Mountain National Park in a day. If you stay in Estes Park, you visit Rocky Mountain National Park. Both areas offer outstanding wildlife viewing in a mountainous setting.
Rocky Mountain National Park is best for elk, moose, mule deer and bighorn sheep. I begin at Horseshoe Meadows for moose, then drive to Moraine Park for elk and Glacier Gorge for moose and elk. In the afternoon, I like Trail Ridge Road for elk, bighorn sheep and marmot, plus the alpine scenery.
The Mt Evans Scenic Byway ascends 7, 000 vertical feet in 28 miles. The paved road is perfect for viewing bighorn sheep, mountain goats and elk. If you like, we arrive at Summit Lake (12, 836 ft) for sunrise. Then continue driving to 14, 130 feet, watching for wildlife the entire way. There's also the Mt Goliath Natural Area and its ancient bristle-cone pines.
I will also instruct on wildlife photography and animal behavior.

My custom wildlife tour is designed around your interests and schedule. I pick-up and drop-off at your location, when you like. Usually, wildlife is most active in morning and then later in the afternoon. An early start affords the best opportunity to view or photograph wildlife and we often begin our day before sunrise. However, if you're a night owl, we can begin when you like and stay through sunset, even try some night photography. I also offer multi-day tours throughout Colorado and Utah.

John was an excellent guide. He adjusted the schedule based on our needs and the crazy weather conditions we had. You will see and learn things not possible without him. He is enjoyable to spend time with. Highly recommend!!
