"The best Hidden Oasis Around"
This Preserve is approximately 880 acres in size and is contiguous with other conserved areas collectively known as the Coachella Valley Preserve System. Tucked into the northern edge of the Indio Hills, the Preserve offers sweeping views of the Little San Bernardino Mountains and the southern edge of Joshua Tree National Park. This wide canyon sweeps down from the little San Bernardino Mountains, through the Indio Hills, and washes onto the wide alluvial fan that borders the north edge of Palm Desert. The canyon contains a large, rare desert wetland and two palm oases.
Native California fan palms thrive in many locations but rarely in such numbers as in the canyons of the Indio Hills. Here, along a line where the San Andreas fault captures groundwater that nurtures the palms, is a wild parkland which is part of the adjacent Coachella Valley Preserve. The park contains some fine palm groves that include Hidden, Pushawalla, Briska, Macomber and Horseshoe palms.
This is a driving and walking tour so please be prepared, bring a hat, water, sunscreen and wear comfortable shoes.
We'll talk about the history of the Coachella Valley, and learn about the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and other Native cultures. After that we will head to the The Coachella Valley Preserve and San Andreas Fault. In 1000 Palms Canyon and the CVP we will get out and do a little nature walk, up into the San Andrea's fault, and hope the BIG one doesn't come along. (LOL). It's about a mile and a half, so it gives us time to take our time. I will be bringing extra water, so we can stop and take a little break and get back in tune with mother nature. After this exciting day, we'll need the Hot Springs.
