More than eighty different geysers and wildlife await you high up in the Andes
The 3rd biggest geothermal field in the planet (and the third biggest in the southern hemisphere) is located about 1:30 hours north of San Pedro de Atacama. We will see more than 80 different geysers almost up to 4000m. A beautiful tour in terms of landscape and wildlife observation.
Quite close to the Bolivian borders in some of the most extreme temperature and dryness conditions of the entire Andes. North of San Pedro there are incredible varieties of landscapes and geography. An active volcano is visible a few minutes after leaving the geothermal field. From this volcano comes out a source of water that develops a unique and typical ecosystem of the highest points of the desert areas in the base of the Andean volcanoes.
It is possible to visit the highest native community of this region. The Machuca village offers some local food and beautiful scenarios, like "Bofedales", a kind of swamp over the 4000m altitude mark where we can observe the local fauna.
Starting from San Pedro we are going to have 1 hour and 30 minutes to arrive to the geothermal field, where I will explain about the geyser's formation and you will be able to see this phenomenon. After having our breakfast inside the park we're going to take the way coming back to San Pedro, but this time, with the sunlight, so we will be able to see part of the landscapes we have missed on the way to the geysers.
We're going to stop close to an active volcano that used to be an important sulphur mine, and there we will see different species of birds that live up to 4000m up close.
We will also stop at the Machuca Village (this small village is the highest establishment of native communities in this desert). Following the way to the south we will also stop near the Puritama Canyon to have a close look at the endemic cactus that lives in this ecological stage. From this point, we will spend 30 more minutes in the vehicle to arrive in San Pedro close to the middle of the day.
