The Port City of Cartagena was one of the most prosperous City Port in the entire Spanish Empire. Geographically well-placed, Cartagena provided a Safe Harbor to any ship to dock, thus it was established as a major trading center. Most industries and material going to the New Granada Viceroyalty were funneled through the city. The lucrative reality that all new Granadan wealth being traded had to go through Cartagena made it an attractive plunder site by pirates from all over the world.

A Recent Review of this tour

We fell in love with Cartagena! Daniel was so informative about the history & current city story. Because he had a driver, too, we were able to walk around different areas of old city and be picked up later. Daniel helped us find good stores for mochillas (woven bags) and emeralds. Also the best shop to buy coffee to bring home. And, cigars! Took us backstage into Heredia Theatre, amazing place. He arranged dinner for us at Carmen which was a true gourmet experience & beautiful place. Highly recommend him
