The first and favourite of the royal chateaux
The Royal Chateau of Blois is the earliest of the famous Renaissance chateaux of the Loire Valley, and a favourite residence of many of the medieval and renaissance kings. It is like three chateaux in one because each of its wings around the main courtyard is from a different period. It's a great way to get to grips with French medieval and renaissance history.
This tour makes an easy day trip from either Tours or Paris.
The tour begins in the courtyard of the castle and we look at the three main architectural styles visible from there. I'll talk about the history of the building and its royal occupants.
The castle was the centre of some very dramatic events in the 16th and 17th century and again in modern times. We will visit the private apartments of Francois I, Catherine de Medici and Henri III as well as the collections of fine and decorative arts held by the museum.
Along the way I will talk about changes in heritage restoration and conservation practices and show you examples of past conservation work.
