Spinning down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to St. Paul and back

We will drive to the Midtown Bike Center (on the Midtown Greenway bike path) to pick up and adjust the bike(s) that you will have chosen and rented on-line (see What's Extra below).

From there, we will take the bike path east to the Mississippi and go south along the rim of the river gorge to Minnehaha Falls (a 53-foot waterfall on Minnehaha Creek that flows into the Mississippi) and historic Fort Snelling (which overlooks the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers).

After crossing Mendota Bridge (which both downtowns can be seen -- a rarity), we will descend to the floodplain and ride through stands of mature hardwoods to downtown St. Paul. After climbing out of the river valley, we will view the city with the State Capitol and the St. Paul Cathedral in the background.

Getting on Summit Avenue, we will bike past its 300-plus Gilded Age mansions to Minneapolis.

Given the distance, three memorable hill-climbs, and several stints of biking on bike lanes, this tour is for experienced cyclists.

Itinerary

From the Midtown Bike Center (on the Midtown Greenway bike path), we will take bike path east to the Mississippi and bike south along the rim of the river gorge to Minnehaha Falls (a 53-foot waterfall on Minnehaha Creek shortly before it flows into the Mississippi) and historic Fort Snelling (which overlooks the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers).

After crossing Mendota Bridge (where both downtowns can be viewed from one spot), we will descend to the floodplain and ride through stands of mature oak, maple and cottonwood trees to downtown St. Paul. After climbing out of the river valley, we will view the city with the State Capitol and the St. Paul Cathedral in the background.

Getting on Summit Avenue, we will bike past its 300-plus Gilded Age mansions to the Lake Street Bridge to Minneapolis.

The last part of the route (from the Mississippi River to the bike shop) will be back along the Midtown Greenway bike path.
