An important place to see
In 1936 the Nazis established the concentration camp Sachsenhausen, about half an hour north of Berlin, as one of the main labor camps on German grounds. Until 1945 more than 200 000 people were imprisoned here and were exposed to hard physical labor and torture. Ten thousands of prisoners of war, Jews, gypsies, homosexuals or people persecuted for political or religious reasons were killed.
We will take a train to the town of Oranienburg and walk or taxi it to the memorial site where we will explore the stories behind the concentration camps and what made Sachsenhausen special within the system. You will hear stories of how the inmates were treated, what methods the Nazis applied to organize and keep the system running and what role the camps played for the German plans.
Find out how the camp leftovers were used after WWII was over and why many more people were imprisoned here until 1950.
