On a private tour following the Berlin Wall to a truly Turkish market in the heart of Berlin's Kreuzberg neighbourhood.

The German wall not only divided two countries and two opposed powers. It also accounted for one of Berlin's most remarkable socio-spacial accumulation of certain immigrants: the Turkish minority, in some areas of Berlin the genuine majority, settled along the then known ends of the western world, mainly in run down houses, often hidden from such amenities as public transport. The traces of the wall and the separation are still tangible and our walk will highlight some special aspects in the history of the Berlin wall, finishing at what is today one of Berlin's liveliest areas, rooted in the tradition of oriental commerce. On Tuesdays and Fridays there is a wonderful open air market with lots of things to look at - and taste!

Itinerary

We will start at Potsdamer Platz and take a dive into German and European history of the late 1960s. We will walk past a remaining watch tower, parts of the historical Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and continue along the wall into Kreuzberg. We will do as archeologists do and identify some hidden traces of that deadly border system of the old wall dividing the two countries and systems, focussing on what this condition meant for the living of minorities on the western side of the division. The tour will end in Berlin's famous district of Kreuzberg with its mixture of migrant, poor, newly rich and gentriefied cultures.

Meeting Location + Tour Duration

Meeting location: We should meet at Potsdamer Platz, right by the historic traffic light in the middle of the square.

End location: The tour will end on Kottbusser Damm by the canal. The underground line 8 is in comfortable reach.

Duration: 4 hours

The tour is a walking tour, this means we will be exposed to weather.

Transportation

This is a walking tour, during which we might take the public bus for some stops.

What’s Included

Other: I will lead you on a walking tour and share my expertise and answer all your questions related to Berlin's history and its situation today. This tour is certainly different from the others in the sense that it focusses on a very honest and contemporary approach to Germany's capital. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of one of Berlin's major socio-cultural aspects as can be perceived today.

Estimated Local Cash Needed

5 Euro - At some point we will take a public bus for a few stops. The ticket costs 1.50 Euro. Plus you might want to buy snacks or a drink.

What’s Extra

Other: The tour does not require any further tickets or the like. However, will will end up in a market that will definitely seduce you to try some of the things that you will see there.

Restrictions

Any tour that I offer without a driver can also be booked with a car and private chauffeur if needed. I use a driver of my own as well as a comfortable Mercedes-Benz Vito. Please contact me for an individual quote.

A Recent Review of this tour

Angel gave us a most delightful day in Berlin. The tour was informative. The weather held out. The Turkish food was "sabroso." But spending a few hours of our lives with Angel was the best part. It was our good fortune to have had an intelligent, good-hearted, enthusiastic guide like Angel.
