Let me take you to my neighbourhood
The district of Schöneberg has a colorful and vibrant past but it is best known for the famous speech John F. Kennedy gave in front of the town hall of western Berlin in Schöneberg, where he exclaimed: „Ich bin ein Berliner!" But Schöneberg is more than that - it is Marlene Dietrich, David Bowie, Albert Einstein and the „Red Island", a little nest of resistance against the Nazis.
I moved here six years ago without any previous knowledge about the area and I was amazed to find out about what has happened here throughout the decades. We will explore the beginnings of the small settlement on the "beautiful hill" as the name says, see the places where Nazi Germany unfolded its power and locked away its enemies, where the resistance gathered and Western Berlin built its centre during Cold War times.
You will also get a good feel for local life by walking the bustling shopping streets and cafés of my neighbourhood which has been spared large tourist crowds so far.
