A cultural and foodie tour in the old town and in the Murat district
A tour to discover the old town and the Murat district (the "new" town built in 1813 during the French domination by Gioacchino Murat). We can visit the Basilica of S. Nicholas (one of the most beautiful example of Romanesque architecture in Puglia and one of the few church in the world that guest 2 religions: the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox), the Cathedral of S. Sabino, the Swabian castle (exterior), the ancient walls, an archeological museum, a picture gallery, Piazza Ferrarese, Piazza Mercantile and the old port with the fishermen selling their fish.
We will admire the maestry of some old ladies making orecchiette (home made tipycal pasta) on the street at the entrance of their homes and we can even enjoy the experience of making orecchiette with them.
At the Murat district you can discover the liberty style architecture (the Palace of the acqueduct, Petruzzelli theatre, Fizzarotti Palace, Mincuzzi Palace, etc. ) as well a shopping tour. During the tour we can stop to enjoy some culinary experiences.
This itinerary (with the old town and the Murat district) is the classic one but, depending on your interests, it can be customized as you like. Being a wine and olive oil sommelier, I suggest you to add a culinary experience such as a street food tasting (the renowned focaccia barese at a bakery, an excellent ice cream made with natural flavors, etc. ), a wine, extra virgin olive oil, typical food (cheese, cold cuts) tasting at a bistrot, a grocery or a wine shop.
We can extend the tour to a full day one adding some city up on the North of Bari (Trani, Barletta, Castel del Monte, Bitonto, Ruvo, Molfetta, Canosa) or on the South (Conversano, Monopoli, Polignano a Mare, Altamura), Taranto, Matera, Alberobello, Ostuni, etc.

Alessandro took us to visit St Nicholas sanctuary and explained its history and religious significance. Then we passed by the Norman-Swabian Castle and Alessandro explained both architecture and history. Near the castle we took a mouth-watering ice-cream before commuting to the narrow streets of old Bari where women work pasta by hand. We had a chance to purchase some orecchiette. We really liked Bari and Alessando.
