Barcelona Roman, Jewish, Medieval, Gaudi, and modern
Once capital of the kingdom of Catalonia, Barcelona is still a place of dreams. On a comprehensive day's visit you will discover a city full of stories: why Columbus came here when he returned from his voyage, why Gaudi used chains to design his masterpieces, and how the local diet helps Catalans live so long. Why are there are no Jews in the Jewish Quarter, and is the Gothic Quarter really gothic? How did the shore get so far from the Medieval Santa Maria del Mar (Saint Mary of the Sea)? We'll look for Saint George and his dragon, patron saint of Catalonia, on the 19th century buildings of Gaudi, discover where the 9th century King Wilfred the Hairy is hidden on the cathedral, and learn why Catalans celebrate the worst day in Barcelona's history: September 11, 1714. Did George Orwell really call the Sagrada Familia 'the ugliest building in Europe', and will it ever be finished? We'll find answers to these and many more questions as we savour this unique Mediterranean city.
Depending on where we agree to meet, we'll walk, use buses and take taxis to see the Gaudí houses, the Gothic quarter with the Cathedral, Jewish quarter (el Call), las Ramblas, la Boqueria market, Santa Maria del Mar, the Born neighborhood and Roman ruins, Parc de la Ciutadella, the Sagrada Familia, Sant Pau monastery and the extraordinary Park Guell. We can have lunch, from tapas to a local restaurant meal. If you want to visit inside any of the sites I will book tickets in advance so no lines to deal with.
