The Barrio Gotico, Jewish Call, Ramblas, markets, Modernisme and Gaudi

Welcome to Barcelona, once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Catalonia. This lively family tour uncovers 2, 000 years of history, from the Roman temple, hidden in the depths of the city centre, to the finishing touches now being put to the amazing Sagrada Familia. Along the way we'll learn why there are no Jews in the Jewish Quarter, why the Gothic Quarter isn't gothic, and why the Medieval church Santa Maria del Mar (Saint Mary of the Sea) is nowhere near the sea. We'll look for Saint George and his dragon, patron saint of Catalonia, concealed on the 19th century buildings of Gaudi and his contemporaries, discover where the 9th century founder of Catalonia, Wilfred the Hairy, is hidden on the cathedral, and discover why the Catalan's national day is the worst in their history: September 11, 1714. And all with the pleasures of outdoor life on the streets and squares of this unique Mediterranean city.

Itinerary

Starting from where you are staying, we can explore the Gothic Quarter, the cathedral, Santa Maria del Mar, el Born, the former Jewish neighborhood, one of the fresh food markets, stroll the Ramblas, plus (in whatever order works best) Gaudí's Palau Güell, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà (la Pedrera), the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell (if you want to see inside these, we will have to reserve tickets).

What’s Extra

Other: If you want to visit inside the Sagrada Familia (25 euros) you can buy the tickets at https://sagradafamilia.org/en/tickets, very easy, or Park Guell at www.parkguellonline.cat/, (I go in free), so no lines.
Anything else you especially want to see I can advise on getting the tickets.

Covid19 considerations: Tours by locals advice and local controls are clear and sensible. So no handshakes for now, and I'll have a mask in enclosed spaces, like vehicles or museums. Any vehicle we use will be sanitized before each tour.
