The sleepy, provincial town of Kanchanaburi has achieved wide-spread fame for its infamous railway, which was built during World War II by Allied POWs and Asian labourers under the watch of the Japanese.
The Death Railway
Kanchanaburi's calm, lush setting on the banks of the Kwai River belies its history. Thousands of lives were lost as the ill-equipped prisoners struggled under appalling conditions to complete over 400km (250 miles) of railway track, called the "Death Railway", linking Thailand with Myanmar (Burma).
Bridge on the River Kwai
The current structure was rebuilt after the war, and only the eight curved sections on it are original. Two trains cross the bridge every day on their way to the town of Nam Tok (Waterfall)
Erawan National Park
The main attraction is the seven-tiered Erawan waterfall, best visited during (or just after) the rainy season (May-Nov) when the water is at full flow. It is a popular sight and can become quite congested with locals at weekends and on public holidays.
