Fun and fascinating half day tour of art treasures in the nation's capital!
Washington DC is one of the greatest cities in the world for lovers of art. This half day tour will include viewings of selected masterpieces in the National Gallery of Art, one of the world's great art museums, with a huge collection of masterpieces from the Renaissance to the present day in two buildings. We will see great art from Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt to Andy Warhol. I have led tours in the National Gallery of Art many times and is am very familiar with the collection-just let me know if there is a particular area or artist that interests you and I will tailor the tour to your taste.
The tour will also include the Peacock Room, decorated by James Whistler, at the Smithsonian Freer Gallery, just around the corner, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery, about a ten minute walk down the road, in a stunning building dating from 1836. Very suitable for families, I can tailor this tour to include items guaranteed to delight children!
A perfect tour for the art lover any time of year, rain or shine, cold or humid as it is indoors, we will meet at the 6th street entrance of the West building of the National Gallery of Art, one of the world's great art museums. In the original West building there are Old Masters and Impressionist paintings and we can see the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Western Hemisphere, works by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet and many others. The sculpture garden, weather permitting, and sculpture court let us enjoy masterpieces by Rodin and Degas. The more recent East Building shows modern art with works by Picasso and Warhol among others.
Nearby is the Smithsonian Freer Gallery with the stunning Peacock room designed by James Whistler. A short walk away is another beautiful building stuffed full of treasures, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery, where we can come face to face with every President and admire the amazing gallery where Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Ball was held.
